Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) plays a critical role in equipping students with the knowledge and encouragement needed to address global sustainability challenges. This study examined the relationship between Extrinsic Motivation (EM) and the cultivation of sustainable education among pre-university students in Kuantan, Pahang. A closed-ended questionnaire was used to gather data from a sample of 127 students through a quantitative approach. SPSS was employed to analyse the data and determine the key factors contributing to students’ engagement in ESD. The study's findings indicate that external factors such as rewards, recognition, and other incentives play a crucial role in fostering student commitment to sustainable education. Pearson's correlation analysis shows a strong positive relationship between EM and ESD (r=0.693, p<0.001). Moreover, regression analysis indicates that EM significantly affects ESD engagement, producing a standardised coefficient of beta=0.693 (p<0.001). This study underscores the significance of a well-structured motivational framework in enhancing ESD, offering valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers. The research findings provide a basis for future studies and practical applications in the formulation of effective sustainability education strategies.
