Abstract

This study explores the potential of Clitoria ternatea (butterfly pea) extract as a sustainable cotton dye, focusing on the effects of varying dyebath pH levels on colour properties. Cotton fabrics were pre-mordanted and dyed under acidic (pH 3.0), neutral (pH 7.0), and alkaline (pH 9.0) conditions. Colour strength (K/S values) and coordinates were measured using the CIELAB system, while fastness tests assessed dye durability. The results revealed that alkaline pH yielded the most vibrant hues, with pre-mordanting significantly enhancing fixation and colourfastness. Overall, the study supports Clitoria ternatea as an eco-friendly and effective alternative to synthetic dyes in textile coloration.
