Abstract

Chemical Health Risk Assessment (CHRA) is a mandatory requirement under the USECHH Regulations 2000 to evaluate health risks arising from the use of Chemicals Hazardous to Health (CHTH) in the workplace. In water treatment plants, workers are frequently exposed to hazardous chemicals through inhalation and dermal routes, especially during routine maintenance, chemical dosing, and sampling activities. Despite this, the implementation of CHRA in such facilities remains inconsistent and often inadequate. Many plants rely on outdated assessments, generic chemical lists, or incomplete evaluations of exposure and control measures. These gaps can lead to underreported risks, ineffective protection, and non-compliance with safety standards.
