Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of pectin-incorporated hybrid sol-gel coating in mitigating corrosion mild steel surface when it is subjected to 0.5 M NaCl solution. Pectin, a natural polymer found on the cell wall of citrus fruits was incorporated into hybrid sol-gel matrix containing TEOS and APTES. Molecular structure of pectin housed adsorption-inducing functionalities that allowed pectin to deposit on metal surface while hybrid sol-gel matrix specialised in providing flexibility and thermal stability. Although they are potentially effective individually, they still have limitations, pectin is easily degrade over time whereas hybrid sol-gel coating have built-in porosity that reduce it performance. Hence, the incorporation of pectin into hybrid sol-gel matrix helped enhancing both functionality in providing anti-corrosion features. The coatings were synthesized by adding various pectin’s concentrations (500-2000 ppm) to search for its optimum conditions. Weight loss analysis showed an incline trend of inhibitor efficiency when pectin’s concentration increased. The maximum inhibitor efficiency was noted at 2000 ppm (73.1%). These outcomes demonstrate the effective synergy of pectin and hybrid sol-gel in mitigating corrosion on mild steel surface in saline medium.
