Abstract

Performance profiling in sports is an essential process that evaluates both the physical and mental aspects of an athlete's performance. It involves identifying key performance indicators (KPIs) that contribute to success in a specific sport and assessing an athlete's strengths and weaknesses in these areas. In the realm of sports psychology, performance profiling has emerged as a critical tool for enhancing athletic performance. This study aims to compare the mental performance profiles of medallist and non-medallist athletes from Perak who participated in SUKMA 2022. A total of 229 Perak athletes participated in the study, which utilized the Psychological Characteristics Related to Sports Performance (CPRD) for assessment. Results from an independent sample t-test indicated significant differences between medallist and non-medallist athletes in terms of stress control (p < 0.003), motivation (p < 0.024), and team cohesion (p < 0.004). However, no significant differences were observed in performance evaluation influence (p > 0.172) and mental skill (p > 0.43) between the two groups. These findings suggest the importance of psychological factors in sports performance. Specifically, stress control, motivation, and team cohesion are key areas where medallists significantly differ from non-medallists, emphasizing the need for targeted mental skills training in these aspects. Through focusing on these psychological factors, athletes can elevate their performance levels and improve their probability of attaining success in competitive sports.
