Abstract

The status of halal and toyyib in the selection of trendy foods is important within the Muslim community, particularly among the younger generation who are exposed to food in restaurants, fast food outlets, and street vendors. This is because it is closely related to self-preservation by avoiding foods that contain forbidden animal elements. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the level of awareness among Islamic studies students at UiTM Shah Alam regarding the status of halal and toyyib. This study also examines the factors influencing trendy food selection among Islamic studies students at UiTM Shah Alam. Additionally, it analyses the positive impact of students' awareness of halal and toyyib on their selections of trendy foods. The methodology employed is a quantitative research design. The research data were analysed using descriptive analysis to interpret the questionnaire responses. The respondents of this study consisted of 121 Islamic studies students at UiTM Shah Alam. The data were analysed statistically to obtain frequencies and percentages. The findings of the study show that the awareness level of UiTM students regarding the status of halal and toyyib is high. The results also indicated the existence of specific factors influencing trendy food selection among UiTM students in Shah Alam. Moreover, the findings show that the positive impact of UiTM students’ awareness of halal and toyyib in trendy food selection is significant. Suggestions are also offered to improve awareness and encourage the practice of making halal and toyyib food choices in students' daily lives. In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of education and awareness regarding halal and toyyib trendy foods among students, as well as their significant impact on halal enforcement agencies and the broader community.
