Abstract

A house is a part of environment and has a close relationship with human development. The well-being of human life begins with a good and quality house. This is so because house is not just about physical structure, but also a space for social interaction and a catalyst for a harmonious community. Islam had set a detailed guidelines on a quality house. This study discussed one of the important aspects in a house namely safety. Discussion and analysis on safety of a house are based on the related Islamic legal maxims (al-qawaid al-fiqhiyyah) and the views of scholars. Three Islamic legal maxims which outline safety aspects of a dwelling are maxims related concept of harm (darar), interest (maslahah) and local customs (urf). In addition, the safety aspect of a house in Islam comprised of physical and non-physical safety for a better quality of life. Study of some selected Islamic legal maxims in the context of safe dwelling implied that a house must be safe for occupancy in order to preserve the five objectives of shariah (maqasid al-shariah).
