The study employed a quantitative research approach, utilizing a survey distributed to 369 respondents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis via SPSS software. The findings indicate that entertainment, information-seeking, and fashion trends are the primary reasons students engage with TikTok. While students recognize TikTok as a source of distraction and time consumption, its direct negative impact on academic performance remains moderate. The correlation analysis shows a significant relationship between TikTok usage and distraction (r = .309, p < .01), as well as between distraction and academic performance (r = .449, p < .01), indicating that distraction plays a more critical role in influencing students’ academic outcomes than TikTok usage alone. Despite the moderate correlation between TikTok usage and academic performance (r = .347, p < .01), students generally perceive the platform as safe and manageable, suggesting that its effects depend largely on individual time management. The study highlights the need for self-regulation strategies to mitigate distractions and optimize TikTok’s potential for educational purposes. Future research should explore digital literacy programs and intervention strategies to help students balance social media engagement and academic responsibilities effectively. These findings contribute to the broader discourse on the role of social media in higher education and underscore the importance of responsible digital consumption among university students.
2025-01-31T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 e- Journal of Media and Societyhttps://journal.uitm.edu.my/ojs/index.php/e-JOMS/article/view/4932The Restriction towards International Celebrities' Performances in Malaysia and the Implication Towards Malaysian Tourism.pdf2025-01-30T16:08:19+08:00Suha Muhannad A. Rooted in Malaysia's commitment to Islamic and conservative values, these limitations often correlate with global entertainment practices, which resorts to creating chaos. qualitative content analysis method is the method for this research, where this research explores cases where international artists faced performance bans or restrictions due to issues such as LGBT advocacy, religious sensitivities, revealing attire, and perceived negative influences. The findings highlight the issues created by these restrictions, such as the potential impact on international artists, the subsequent reduction in Malaysia's attraction as a cultural tourism destination, and its standing in the global entertainment industry. The study emphasizes the importance of balanced regulatory regimes that respect local values while meeting the aspirations of international artists. Differentiated rules throughout Malaysian regions, as well as more communication with overseas stakeholders, are recommended to facilitate cultural interchange while preserving national identity.
2025-01-31T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 e- Journal of Media and Societyhttps://journal.uitm.edu.my/ojs/index.php/e-JOMS/article/view/4951The Level of Awareness of Mental Health and Its Impact on Tiktok Users2025-01-30T16:41:07+08:00Adli Zikry Hasnolfarrah318@uitm.edu.myNurAlya Shazzira Abdul Azizfarrah318@uitm.edu.myNur Ain Mohd Fisolfarrah318@uitm.edu.myAman Dini Ahmad Redzauddinfarrah318@uitm.edu.myAbdul Rauf Ridzuanabdulrauf@uitm.edu.myMohamad Hafifi Jamrihafifijamri@uitm.edu.mySiti Nur Farrah Faadiah Ab Ghanifarrah318@uitm.edu.my
In this era of globalization, social media platforms have become a universal space for communication, self-expression, and community building. Among these platforms, TikTok has emerged as a global phenomenon, captivating millions with its short-form videos and diverse content. This research examines the impact of TikTok content on the mental health of users who are 18 and older. With over 1 billion users worldwide, including users from Malaysia, it has become a dominant force in public culture, sparking worries among families, lawmakers, and therapists about its impact on mental health. There has been a significant increase in depression among Malaysians since 2019, where another study revealed that about 1 million individuals aged 15 years and older were suffering from depression, with the number of people with depression having doubled from 2019 to 2023. However, considering the wide range of content on the platform about mental health, it is still unclear how much of an awareness TikTok users have of mental health education. To investigate the awareness of mental health among TikTok users, particularly in the Malaysian context among the users aged 18 and above, a research was conducted by employing a quantitative approach using Google Forms. This study successfully collected responses from 401 respondents representing diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, beliefs, and educational levels. The results indicate a significant level of awareness among TikTok users regarding mental health issues, attributed in part to the abundance of mental health-related content on the platform (m = 3.08, m2 = 3.04). In conclusion, the study shows that users accept TikTok as a platform to spread awareness and as a significant platform to talk about mental health and provide support to the community globally.
2025-01-31T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 e- Journal of Media and Societyhttps://journal.uitm.edu.my/ojs/index.php/e-JOMS/article/view/4955Pedagogi Inovatif: Sinergi AI dan Komunikasi Untuk Pengajaran Abad ke-21 2025-01-30T16:44:58+08:00Muhammad Hamidee Ridzuanmuhdhamidee@gmail.com
The analysis reveals that the advancement of technology serves its core purpose of fostering transformative changes, which extend to various aspects of human life, including Islamic Da’wah. The rise of digital media, supported by social media platforms, has expanded the ways in which Da’wah is spread beyond the traditional methods of preaching. Today, Da’wah can be efficiently shared through technology, overcoming geographical and physical barriers, reaching individuals across different locations, from one mobile device to another, from home to home, and even across international borders.
2025-01-31T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 e- Journal of Media and Societyhttps://journal.uitm.edu.my/ojs/index.php/e-JOMS/article/view/4968The Level of Media Literacy in a Post-Pandemic2025-01-30T17:21:57+08:00Ain Sabrina Mohamad Roslihafifijamri@uitm.edu.myAinur Zamratul Fatihah Abd Rahimhafifijamri@uitm.edu.myNur Sabrina Syahirah Sukimanhafifijamri@uitm.edu.myNurdiyanah Idrishafifijamri@uitm.edu.myMohamad Hafifi Jamrihafifijamri@uitm.edu.myAbdul Rauf Ridzuanabdulrauf@uitm.edu.my
Media literacy has become an increasingly critical skill in the post-pandemic era, particularly in addressing the spread of misinformation and disinformation that can negatively impact society. This study aims to assess the level of media literacy among the public after the COVID19 pandemic and examine their tendencies toward teleworking in the post-pandemic era. A quantitative approach was employed, with data collected through an online survey distributed to 150 respondents. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis to identify trends and patterns related to media literacy and teleworking.Findings indicate that while most respondents acknowledge the importance of media literacy in daily life, there is still confusion regarding its actual concept, especially in distinguishing between fake and credible news. Additionally, the study reveals that although teleworking is supported, a significant portion of respondents still prefer working in an office rather than from home. These findings highlight the need for increased awareness and education on media literacy, as well as the necessity of flexible teleworking policies. This study suggests that media literacy training and education should be further integrated into higher education curricula to combat the challenges of infodemic and ensure sustainable teleworking practices in the evolving work environment.
2025-01-31T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 e- Journal of Media and Societyhttps://journal.uitm.edu.my/ojs/index.php/e-JOMS/article/view/4971The Impact of Digital Media on Academic Performance 2025-01-30T17:32:11+08:00Nurulsyarina Rusnihafifijamri@uitm.edu.myNur Dayana Aqillah Abdul Zulghaffarhafifijamri@uitm.edu.myNur Sakinah Rahmathafifijamri@uitm.edu.myNurul Izati Balqis Abdul Latiffhafifijamri@uitm.edu.myMohamad Hafifi Jamrihafifijamri@uitm.edu.myAbdul Rauf Ridzuanabdulrauf@uitm.edu.my
Digital media plays a significant role in modern education, with social media and video games being two of the most frequently used platforms among students. This study examines the positive and negative impacts of these digital tools on students' academic performance. The research aims to determine the extent to which social media and video games contribute to or hinder academic success, focusing on their effects on learning activities, time management, and cognitive abilities. The study employs a quantitative research methodology, utilizing structured questionnaires to collect data from students of various educational backgrounds. Findings reveal that excessive use of social media and video games can negatively impact academic performance by causing distractions, reducing study time, and impairing focus.
