Abstract

The good values in tasawwuf are among the important aspects that need to be integrated into the discussion of Arabic grammar (nahu). However, the reality is that its discussion is separated from the spiritual aspects. This causes the discussion to focus solely on language acquisition without emphasising the integration of good values. This article highlights al-Qushayri's approach in integrating several fundamental principles of tasawwuf into Arabic grammar as found in his work entitled Naḥw al-Qulūb al-Kabir. This qualitative study applies content analysis methods and uses the book as the primary source. The findings of the study show that al-Qushayri has applied five basic principles of tasawwuf, namely aqīdah (creed), shari’ah (law), dhikr (remembrance), istiqāmah (steadfastness) and adab (manner) in several grammar topics. The process of integration is based on a comparative method referring to two aspects of similarity. The first aspect looks at the similarity in the use of terms. The second aspect refers to the similarity in the meanings of the principles, which can be compared with the meanings contained in certain Arabic grammar rules. The findings of this study are expected to introduce a new approach in the effort to produce an integrated curriculum that encompasses both spiritual and linguistic aspects in the subject of Arabic grammar.
