Application of Tarbiyyah Quraniyyah in Leadership: Lessons from the Story of Zulkarnain in the Concept of Malaysia Madani

Abstract

Tarbiyyah Quraniyyah is a fundamental component in the process of educating and developing the human spirit so that one’s entire existence becomes more meaningful under Divine guidance. The story of Iskandar Zulkarnain in the Quran, particularly in surah al-Kahfi, exemplifies leadership qualities in governance: a leader who is obedient, wise, and efficient in managing a country. The essence of his lessons can be applied and realised in the context of Malaysia Madani, a vision aimed at transforming Malaysia into a sustainable, successful, and innovative nation rooted in mutual respect and kindness. The keyword Madani refers to the trust between the government and the people, built on transparency and cooperation. Leaders and citizens are the two pillars essential for achieving Malaysia Madani’s goals. This qualitative study employed data collection methods through library research, involving both primary and secondary data. The data analysis techniques used were content analysis, as well as inductive and deductive approaches. As a result, this study evaluates tarbiyyah Quraniyyah through the lens of leadership, as revealed in the lessons from the account of Zulkarnain. It further explores the key ideals of Malaysia Madani that promote national harmony. The study found that integrating Zulkarnain's story into Malaysia Madani can inspire leaders to embody Quranic values such as well-being, kindness, creativity, and confidence. The significance of this study lies in its role as a guide for leaders to emulate Zulkarnain's exemplary leadership in developing baldatun tayyibatun (a prosperous and virtuous nation) and successfully realising the vision and goals of Malaysia Madani.
