Abstract

Information governance plays a vital role in the development and maintenance of academic areas by adhering to all information governance practices in universities. This article examines the key factors that influence the development of an Information Governance (IG) framework within Malaysian public universities. It presents an in-depth case study of Malaysian public universities, examining how regulatory compliance, governance conformity, and risk management link with information quality (IQ) and decision quality (DQ), contributing to the IG landscape. A qualitative case study approach was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with strategic-level stakeholders, including directors and librarians, and were thematically analysed. The findings are specific to selected universities, which can be generalised across all Malaysian higher education. Nevertheless, they offer a foundation for expanding IG implementation strategies nationally. This study contributes unique insights into the IG practices of Malaysian research universities, emphasising the contextual challenges and strategies employed by the universities necessary for robust IG development. Recommendations for further research include a broader emphasis on the private universities, specifically focusing on the development and implementation of action toward an information governance framework.
