AI Use Statement
JIKM Statement on the Use of Artificial Intelligence
January 2025
Introduction
This statement provides guidance for JIKM authors, readers, reviewers, and editors on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. AI tools, including Generative AI (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs), are evolving rapidly and can assist in research by refining language, generating ideas, improving figures, and analyzing data. JIKM encourages the ethical and responsible use of AI to enhance research quality while emphasizing that AI cannot replace human creativity, critical thinking, and judgment.
Risks of Using AI
While AI offers many benefits, authors should be mindful of potential risks:
Inaccuracies and Bias: AI outputs may contain errors, biases, or outdated information due to its reliance on evolving datasets.
Confidentiality and Intellectual Property: AI tools may inadvertently use or expose confidential data, intellectual property, or copyrighted material.
Lack of Attribution: AI often fails to accurately attribute ideas, quotes, or sources, risking intellectual dishonesty.
Data Misuse: AI platforms may store and reuse submitted data, potentially violating ethical or institutional data protection policies.
Privacy Infringement: AI’s reuse of uploaded information can breach the privacy of research participants and infringe on author rights.
Responsibilities of Authors
Authors are fully responsible for:
-Ensuring compliance with ethical standards, intellectual property rights, and data protection policies.
-Guaranteeing the accuracy and integrity of their research.
-If AI tools are used, authors must include the following information in their manuscript:
-The name and version of the AI tool used.
-How the AI tool was used.
-Why the AI tool was used.
Prohibited Uses
JIKM prohibits using GenAI to:
-Create scholarly content or write research manuscripts.
-Interpret or draw conclusions from research data.
-Act as an author, as AI cannot take responsibility for scholarly accuracy or meaning.
Conclusion
AI is a powerful tool but must be used responsibly. Transparency, ethical considerations, and human accountability are essential to maintaining the integrity of scholarly research.
