About the Journal

E-Journal of Islamic Thought & Understanding (E-JITU) (e-ISSN 2600-9617) is an open-access international refereed journal and runs biannual issues (April and October). E-JITU is published by Penerbit Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM Press) and managed by Academy of Contemporary Islamic Studies (ACIS), UiTM Cawangan Melaka, Malaysia. E-JITU publishes research and concept papers that address significant issues in Islamic studies that are relevant to the academician and the community at large. E-JITU is a peer-reviewed open access journal with NO article processing charge (APC).

AIM

To provide an avenue for fellow academics to share their findings, new ideas, and knowledge in fields connected towards an integration between Islam and modern knowledge. The editorial board welcomes various categories of articles to be considered for publication here which have not been published or considered to be published in other journals. We accept original/ full/ experimental/ theoretical and empirical articles. We also accept general review/conceptual articles.

PEER REVIEW PROCESS AND POLICY

The E-Journal of Islamic Thought & Understanding (E-JITU) peer-review policy is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics and supporting ethical research practices. E-JITU’s reviewers adhere to the COPE Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers. Peer review, in all forms, is crucial for ensuring the integrity of the scholarly record. This process relies heavily on trust and requires everyone involved to act responsibly and ethically. Peer reviewers are essential to this process, yet they often assume the role without adequate guidance and may not be fully aware of their ethical responsibilities. The COPE Ethical Guidelines for Peer Reviewers outline the fundamental principles and standards that all peer reviewers should follow during the peer-review process. These guidelines aim to offer valuable guidance to researchers, serve as a reference for journals and editors in directing their reviewers, and act as an educational resource for institutions training their students and researchers.

Type of Peer Review

The E-Journal of Islamic Thought & Understanding (E-JITU) utilizes a ‘double blind’ review process, ensuring that referees remain anonymous to the author(s) throughout and after the review process, while the identity of the author(s) also remain unknown to the reviewers. Authors must submit the title page (containing full author information) separately from the main manuscript.

Reviewer Selection Process

Reviewers are selected based on their expertise relevant to the manuscript submitted. The reviewer database of E-Journal of Islamic Thought & Understanding (E-JITU) is continuously updated. E-JITU welcomes referee suggestions from the author(s), although these recommendations are non-binding and may not be utilized. Each manuscript submitted will be reviewed by at least two independent referees, after which the editor will make a final decision.

Reviewer reports

Reviewers will be asked to evaluate the manuscript based on the following criteria:

The manuscript demonstrated originality in thought, methodology, and data.
The research is methodologically robust.
The manuscript presents results clearly with statistical analysis, and whether it supports the conclusion.
The manuscript correctly and thoroughly cites previous relevant work.
The manuscript adheres to appropriate ethical guidelines, particularly plagiarism.
The research significantly contributes to the knowledge and advancement of the field.

Language correction is not part of the peer-review process, but referees can suggest improvements to the language and style of the manuscript. During the final round, the editor will review the manuscript for linguistic and stylistic accuracy, and therefore may apply or recommend corrections as needed. In rare instances, the author(s) may need to do proofreading or comprehensive linguistic and style revisions by returning the manuscript.

Peer Review Process

Upon receiving an email invitation to review a journal article, the reviewer should respond by clicking the provided link to indicate whether they are able to review the manuscript. Following this, the reviewer can proceed with the steps outlined on the website. The reviewer may either fill in the comments for the author box or upload a file with their comments. Later, each reviewer is required to make an initial decision by selecting one of the options provided.

Accept submission: The manuscript meets the standards of the journal and is ready for copyediting and publication process.
Revisions required: Minor revisions are needed, which can be re-reviewed by the referee or accepted by the editor.
Resubmit for review: Major revisions are required with another round of peer review.
Resubmit elsewhere: The manuscript does not fit and meet the standards of the journals or the journal’s focus, and scope.
Decline submission: The manuscript is rejected due to significant weaknesses and not meeting the journal’s standarts.

Duration of review process

The duration of the review process relies on the referees’ responsiveness. Typically, the review process will take about 2 weeks to 1 month.

Final report and decision

Based on the reviewer report and suggestion, along with revision done by the authors, the editor will have the final say on to whether to accept or reject the manuscript. The decision will then be sent to the author(s) in Journal Submisison System or by email.

ETHICS POLICY

This is the statement of ethics for E-Journal of Islamic Thought & Understanding (E-JITU) published by Universiti Teknologi MARA Press (Penerbit UiTM) for Academy of Contemporary Islamic Studies (ACIS), UiTM Cawangan Melaka, Malaysia. E-JITU aspires to select and publish, through double-blind peer-review. A guideline on E-JITU code of ethics largely based upon the principles upheld by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). It covers the code of ethics for chief editor, editorial board members, reviewers, and authors.

Duties Of Authors

To be responsible of ensuring only new and original work is submitted. If the authors have used the work and/or words of others, this must be appropriately cited or quoted
To ensure the work produced is factually accurate and contains no matter unfounded or illegitimate and has not been previously published in other journals.
To ensure submitted articles are not being reviewed or considered by other journals simultaneously. The articles are only allowed to publish after receiving a formal rejection from the journal or if withdrawal request is officially accepted by the journal.
To inform the Chief Editor or the publisher of any inaccuracy of data in their published work so that correction or retraction of article can be done.
To make significant contributions and be held accountable for any shortcoming in their work.
To do corrections and improvement as commented by reviewers/editor and submit Copyright Transfer Agreement (as attached).
To ensure that the manuscript does not violate any proprietary or personal rights of others (including, without limitation, any copyrights or privacy rights).
To declare that no financial interest is gained in the subject matter of the manuscript, nor is affiliated with an organization or entity with a financial interest in the subject matter of the manuscript.

Duties Of Reviewers

To disclose any competing interest before agreeing to review a submission.
To refuse to review any submission due to a conflict of interest or inadequate knowledge.
To review all submissions objectively, fairly, and professionally.
To reveal any ethical misconduct encountered while reviewing to the Chief Editor for further action.
To ensure the originality of a submission and be alert to any plagiarism and redundant publication.
To obtain permission from the publisher before disclosing the content of the submission.
To adhere to the time allocated for the review process and request for extension to review the submission from the Chief Editor.

Duties Of Editorial Board Members

To assist the Chief Editor in the selection process of manuscript to be published in E-JITU;
To evaluate the contents and language of the potential manuscript that have been selected by the Chief Editor;
To provide recommendation in terms of quality and suitability of the manuscript in accordance with scope of E-JITU;
To re-evaluate the manuscript that have been corrected by the author/(s);
To give suggestion of improvement for the Chief Editor to make decision of selection;
To give feedback on the quality of the manuscript within the any given time.
To assist in maintaining the highest standards of quality of the manuscript published with high ethics and competence;
To recommend manuscript of originality, quality with highest standards;
To assist to call and obtain manuscripts from colleagues, acquaintance, research scholars, and students etc. within or outside of the members institution; and
To promote E-JITU at appropriate platforms such as Conference of National and International Importance, Seminars, Symposium and Workshops.

Duties Of Chief Editor

To evaluate manuscripts fairly and solely on their intellectual merit.
To ensure confidentiality of manuscripts and not disclose any information regarding manuscripts to anyone other than the people involved in the publishing process.
To be responsible to decide when and which articles are to be published.
To actively seek the views of board members, reviewers, and authors on how to improve/ increase the image and visibility of the journal.
To give clear instructions to potential contributors on the submission process and what is expected of the authors.
To ensure appropriate reviewers are selected/ identified for the reviewing process.
To ensure authors should submit only original work that is not plagiarized and has not been published or being considered elsewhere. Appropriate software’s may be used by the editorial office to check for similarities of submitted manuscripts with existing literature. Inclusion of fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements are unacceptable.
To ensure work and/or words from other publications must be appropriately cited or quoted.

REPORTING

Authors should state their results clearly, honestly, and without fabrication, falsification, or inappropriate data manipulation. The methods used in the work should be clearly and unambiguously described so that the findings can be repeated and confirmed by other researchers.

A good abstract should consist of introduction, problem statement, quantitative results and quantitative conclusion. Chemistry formula and equations are correctly typed. Any article that does not comply will be returned for either can be corrected or permanently rejected.

CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

A statement on conflict of interest must be included in the manuscript if authors receive any support that might be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.

AUTHORSHIP AND COLLABORATION

Name of authors listed in a paper should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the report.

Only those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. Others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the work must be acknowledged or listed as contributors. It is the duty of the corresponding author to ensure that all appropriate co-authors and no inappropriate co-authors are included on the paper. All co-authors must approve the final version of the paper and agree to the version of the paper before submission.

MULTIPLE OR REDUNDANT

Authors should not publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research output in more than one journal or primary publication. A similar manuscript should not be submitted to more than one journal concurrently as this constitutes as unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.

PLAGIARISM AND SELF-PLAGIARISM

All works in the manuscript should be free of any plagiarism, falsification, fabrication, or omission of significant material. Authors are expected to explicitly cite others' work and ideas, even if the work or ideas are not quoted exactly or paraphrased. Self-plagiarism (or ”redundancy”) can occur in at least two ways:

Authors recycle portions of their previous writings by using identical or nearly identical sentences or paragraphs from earlier writings in subsequent research papers, without quotation or acknowledgement; or

Authors create multiple papers that are slight variations of each other, which are submitted for publication in different journals but without acknowledgement of the other papers.

OPEN ACCESS POLICY

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Therefore, the user must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. The user may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses the user or his/her use. The user may not use the material for commercial purposes, distribute the modified material, or build upon the existing material. The user may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.

PUBLICATION FEES

There is NO Article Processing Charge (APC) for this journal. The accepted articles are published free of charge.

Code of Publication Ethics and Malpractice – E-Journal of Islamic Thought and Understanding (E-JITU)

1. Introduction

The E-Journal of Islamic Thought and Understanding (E-JITU) adheres to the highest standards of publication ethics and takes all possible measures against publication malpractice. The editorial board, reviewers, authors, and editors involved in the publication process are expected to adhere to the ethical standards outlined by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). E-JITU is committed to maintaining the integrity of the academic record and ensuring ethical oversight in all aspects of its publication process.

2. Duties of Editors

Fair Play: Editors evaluate manuscripts solely based on their academic merit and relevance to the journal’s scope, without regard to authors’ race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy.

Confidentiality: Editors must maintain confidentiality concerning all submitted manuscripts and must not disclose any information to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, or other editorial advisers as appropriate.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: Editors will not use unpublished information disclosed in a submitted manuscript for their own research purposes without the author’s explicit written consent. Editors should recuse themselves from handling manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest.

Decision on Publication: Editors are responsible for deciding which of the submitted articles should be published, based on the paper’s importance, originality, clarity, validity, and relevance to E-JITU’s scope.

Handling Allegations of Misconduct: Editors will take reasonable steps to identify and prevent the publication of papers where research misconduct has occurred, including plagiarism, citation manipulation, and data falsification or fabrication. If misconduct is suspected, editors will follow COPE guidelines to address the issue.

3. Duties of Reviewers

Contribution to Editorial Decision: Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and helps the author to improve the manuscript.

Promptness: Reviewers who feel unqualified to review a manuscript or are unable to provide a prompt review should notify the editor and withdraw from the review process.

Confidentiality: Manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents and must not be disclosed or discussed with others except as authorized by the editor.

Objectivity: Reviews should be conducted objectively and constructively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate.

Acknowledgement of Sources: Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors and should alert the editor to any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript and any other published work.

Conflicts of Interest: Reviewers should not review manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships with any of the authors or institutions connected to the papers.

4. Duties of Authors

Reporting Standards: Authors should present an accurate account of their work and its significance, with sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work.

Originality and Plagiarism: Authors must ensure that their work is entirely original and must properly cite the work and words of others. All manuscripts will be screened for plagiarism using Turnitin or iThenticate.

Multiple, Redundant or Concurrent Publication: Authors should not publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication.

Authorship of the Paper: Authorship should be limited to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All authors should approve the final version of the paper and agree to its submission.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: All authors should disclose any financial or other substantive conflicts of interest that might influence the results or interpretation of the manuscript.

Fundamental Errors in Published Works: When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work, it is their obligation to promptly notify the editor and cooperate to retract or correct the paper.

Data Access and Retention: Authors may be asked to provide the raw data supporting their findings for editorial review and should be prepared to provide public access to such data, where appropriate, and retain such data for a reasonable time after publication.

Ethical Approval for Research Involving Humans or Animals: If the work involves human participants or animals, authors must ensure that the research has been conducted in accordance with relevant institutional and national ethical guidelines and that appropriate ethical approval has been obtained. Evidence of such approval must be provided upon request.

Use of Artificial Intelligence and Third-party Services: If AI tools (e.g., language models) or third-party editorial services were used during manuscript preparation, authors must clearly acknowledge their use in the manuscript.

5. Publisher’s Responsibilities

The publisher of E-JITU is committed to ensuring that editorial decisions are based only on academic merit and that ethical standards are upheld. The publisher works closely with editors, authors, and reviewers to maintain transparency, to manage conflicts of interest, and to address any allegations of misconduct following COPE’s core practices. The publisher also supports post-publication corrections, including issuing corrections, retractions, or expressions of concern where necessary.

6. Ethical Oversight

E-JITU ensures ethical oversight in all aspects of its publication process. Allegations of misconduct, unethical research practices, or other violations will be taken seriously and investigated following COPE guidelines. Disciplinary or corrective actions may include retractions, corrections, or bans on future submissions.

7. Complaints and Appeals

E-JITU provides a mechanism for handling complaints about the publication process. Appeals regarding editorial decisions or concerns about ethical misconduct can be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief for formal review. All appeals will be handled fairly, promptly, and transparently.

8. Post-Publication Discussions and Corrections

E-JITU encourages responsible discussion of published content. Where errors are found, the journal will issue corrections, retractions, or expressions of concern in accordance with COPE standards to maintain the integrity of the academic record.
