Abstract

Despite Nigeria’s large Muslim population of approximately 77.3 million, limited research has been conducted to address the country’s Halal needs. This study explored the perspectives of abattoir workers involved in Halal beef processing at two abattoirs in Abuja. Primary data were collected through telephone interviews using semi-structured interview questions. While the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) provides guidelines for Halal beef handling in Nigeria—guidelines that share similarities with those issued by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM)—the findings revealed a general lack of awareness of both sets of guidelines among the interviewed abattoir workers. Participants reported that their understanding of Halal beef handling best practices was primarily based on personal beliefs rather than formal standards. This highlights the urgent need to increase awareness of NAFDAC’s guidelines and implement targeted training programs for abattoir workers in Nigeria. Additionally, it was observed that key logistics activities related to Halal beef—such as packaging, storage, and transportation—are often managed by third-party logistics (3PL) providers, making it challenging to verify the Halal integrity of the overall supply chain.
