Abstract

The halal hotel industry is a vital component of the rapidly growing global Islamic tourism sector. This study explores the future of halal hotels in Malaysia and Indonesia by examining key challenges and strategic opportunities in both countries. The findings highlight major barriers such as the lack of universal halal certification standards, limitations in basic infrastructure, and uneven levels of industry awareness. Nevertheless, significant opportunities emerge through the adoption of digital technology, the rising demand from Muslim travelers, and the potential for stronger bilateral cooperation. The study proposes development strategies that include policy empowerment, capacity building of human resources, and comprehensive integration of tourism with Islamic values. The implications of this research are expected to guide policymakers, industry players, and academics in formulating holistic strategies to strengthen the position of Malaysia and Indonesia as leading halal hotel hubs in Southeast Asia.
