Abstract

PwDs and unemployment is increasing at an alarming rate. The increase of unemployment for
PwDs is due to the discrimination by employer towards them and suggested self-employment to
increase work opportunity for them. Within this context, disabilities are common in every
country in the world. However, not many PwDs are employed. Unfairness still becomes the main
issue for PwDs as not much opportunities to support and guide them thus, unemployment rate
among them is growing in Malaysia. This study looks into several cases in Kuala Lumpur to
understand on the factors that make PWDs sustain in business. It is shown that, four factors that
are the main points in this study are knowledge on start-up business and managing risk,
financial support, motivational environment and networking. The results of the study
highlighted that three factors that include knowledge on start-up and managing risk, financial
support and motivational environment, show positive results in helping in sustaining these
entrepreneurs with disabilities in their businesses. For the last factor which is the networking,
researcher found that the networking for entrepreneurs with disabilities are low. This article
provides compelling evidence that people with disabilities are more than capable of supporting
themselves as business owners as long as they receive all necessary assistance from the
government or relevant non-governmental organizations (NGO).
