Use of Generative AI Policy

This policy sets out JIBE's requirements for the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), including Large Language Models (LLMs), in manuscript preparation and related editorial processes.

Generative AI tools may be used only as assistive tools and must not replace human scholarly judgment, intellectual contribution or accountability.

1. Permitted Use

AI tools may be used for:

  • Language refinement and readability improvement
  • Grammar and style correction
  • Formatting assistance
  • Basic visualization support
  • Idea structuring at a preliminary stage

AI use must remain assistive and non-substantive.

2. Prohibited Use

AI tools must not be used to:

  • Generate research findings or results
  • Perform data analysis that forms the basis of conclusions
  • Write core scholarly arguments or interpretations
  • Fabricate, alter, or simulate research data
  • Be listed as authors under any circumstance

3. Author Responsibility

Authors are fully responsible for all content submitted, including any AI-assisted material.

Where AI tools are used, authors must ensure:

  • Outputs are verified for accuracy
  • Content is original and properly integrated
  • No confidential or restricted data is entered into external systems
  • The final manuscript reflects the authors' own scholarly interpretation, critical analysis and intellectual contribution.

To promote transparency and maintain the integrity of the scholarly record, authors must disclose any use of generative AI tools in the preparation of the manuscript.

4. AI Use Disclosure

If AI tools are used, a disclosure must be included in the manuscript stating:

  • The tool name and version
  • The purpose of use (e.g., language editing, formatting)
  • The section(s) where it was applied

5. Review and Editorial Use

Manuscripts and review materials must not be uploaded to public AI systems.

AI tools must not be used to generate, replace or influence peer-review judgments, reviewer recommendations or editorial decisions.

6. Integrity Review

Where inappropriate or undisclosed use of generative AI is identified, JIBE may investigate the matter in accordance with its Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement and take appropriate editorial action, including rejection of the manuscript, publication of a correction or retraction or other measures necessary to preserve the integrity of the scholarly record.
